Eurovision 2012

Journal Entry: Wed May 16, 2012, 9:26 PM
Edit
So! The 2 semi-finals are over and we have the 26 finalist: Hungary, Albania, Lithuania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Russia, Iceland, Cyprus, Estonia, Norway, Romania, Denmark, Greece, Sweden, Turkey, Malta, FYR Macedonia, Ireland, Serbia, Ukraine and Moldova, alonside the big 5 of course; UK, France, Italy, Spain and Germany and the host country Azerbaijan.

As usual there were some surprises from the semi-finals, I thought countries like Slovenia and Bulgaria would qualify, and others like Malta and Lithuania wouldn't. Even so I'm quite satisfied with the results, after all for the first time, my top 10 favourites are all in the final XD Who would've known?

I was very glad to see Russia qualifying, the grannies are so cute. I had my doubts because on one side many people love them but on the other, there are also many people who think they're only a big joke so I wasn't sure they would pass. But they did! So yay!

Other countries I was glad to see qualify were Albania and Denmark. At first I hated Rona Nishliu's song but with time I learned to appreciate it. Now I want it to take a good place, let's hope so! Denmark as well, I love that song! I hope Soluna to take a good position at the and as well.

Who do you think is gonna win?

My personal top 10:

10. Can Bonomo - Love Me Back (Turkey)
Turkey is usually one of my favourite countries when it comes to Eurovision, Dum Tek Tek from 2009 and We could be the same from 2010 are probably two of my favourite songs from the contest ever. Can Bonomo's Love me back is not precisely my top favourite from this year, but is still a good one, catchy and quite different.

9. Nina Zilli - L'Amore È Femmina (Italy)
Forgive me if I was skeptical about Italy, because even when it came second last year, I didn't like Raphael Gualazzi's song at all. However Nina is a different story and I instantly fell in love with this retro-feeling song. I'm more a fan of the original in full italian, however I'm already getting used to this bilingual version (mostly in english).

8. Ivi Adamou - La La Love (Cyprus)
You can't deny how catchy this song is, you only have to listen to it once and it'll get stuck in your head all day.

7. Gaitana - Be My Guest (Ukraine)
Another catchy song. Admittedly it sounds more like a soccer song, (ideal for the Euro Cup maybe?) However I never said that as a bad thing XD

6. Mandinga - Zaleilah (Romania)
I find this as one of the most peculiar songs from this year, I was not expecting to hear a song sung in spanish from a country like Romania XD (I mean if it was Spain it would be more than expectable right?) However it was a nice surprise. I couldn't like this song more!

5. Eleftheria Eleftheriou - Aphrodisiac (Greece)
Greece is also one of my favourite countries when it comes to Eurovision. I've liked the greek entries almost without fail every year and Aphrodisiac was not an exception. I really like the rhythm, and the set on stage promises to be one of my favourites.

4. Tooji - Stay (Norway)
Norway was a big deception last year, not because I didn't like Stella Mwangi's song, but precisely the opposite, I was hoping it to qualify to the final but it didn't. I hope this year will be different with Tooji's hips :P And yes, I know he looks like a copy of Eric Saade, but really, it's only appearance, both songs and interpreters are quite different.

3. Loreen - Euphoria (Sweden)
The big favourite, the one everybody is talking about. Just like the majority of fans I also think is gonna be the winner, and I would be very happy about it! I do think is a great song, and I really like Loreen, she seems to be a very down to earth girl, but in my very honest and personal opinion, there are other 2 songs I like more....

2. Zeljko Joksimovic - Nije ljubav stvar (Serbia)
I really loved Zeljko's participation in 2004, when I heard he would be back this year I got excited and had big expectations for the song. I didn't get disappointed. I absolutely adore this song, the combination of gorgeous instrumentation and the beautiful serbian language make this one a delight to my ears.

1. Pastora Soler - Quédate Conmigo (Spain)
It's a surprise even for me, to have this song in first position. First of all, I don't usually like the spanish entries, at least not enough to be on my top 10. Secondly, I first heard this song and I didn't like it that much, but with time it grew on me to the point that today is my top favourite. In my opinion the most emotional song of this year, Pastora's voice is amazing. With Spain you never know what's gonna happen, but I'm hoping it will do well, because this song deserves it, but regardless of the official results, this song is a winner for me :)

I really loved the Zeljko Joksimovic video. The sign language performance really appealed to me. I've had deaf friends and learned a bit of sign language. Though I didn't recognize all the words, it was really compelling.

I like a lot of these videos. A lot of fun to watch, thanks for sharing. ;D They all made me smile.

I've wanted to learn sign language for a long time, I have a huge respect for it and I consider it amazing, being able to communicate, to speak without words. Maybe one day I'll learn :)

Aren't they great? :D I love Eurovision, the final is tomorrow if you want to see it! (you can watch it online via eurovision.tv)

I learned sign language because a friend who is deaf, she was signing to a Nirvana song by sitting next to the speaker and feeling the music. I never saw something more beautiful. I could feel the music like she felt it when she 'sang'. I took a course of ASL (American Sign Language for the Deaf). I'm certain some of the signs were not American ;P Since it is Euro and all... So I didn't really understand all of it. More the meaning than the words. I would have to watch it again to try to understand it better. It was high school when I studied and I don't get much practice.

A lot of the signs make sense like 'walk' or 'stand'... And if you learn the alphabet, whatever you are missing a word, you can fingerspell. Though, many people skip words in sentences. Like "How are you" would be "How you?". It is a faster way to speak, and if you ever have seen a group of people signing, they talk fast! I'm a slow reader so could never be an interpreter. But very glad I learned the skill.

I might like to see it. Do they film it live? I'll give it a check.

I'm always surprise when the UK 'qualify'. our songs are always pretty bland or cheesy. I always get the feeling we're allowed in because we pay so much towards it .. which always feels ... wrong.

It's very controversial, the whole issue of the "Big Five" just like you said, it doesn't sound fair that Germany, Spain, Italy, France and the UK don't need to pass through the semi-finals just for being the five biggest financial contributors to the EBU, on the other hand without these contributions the contest wouldn't be possible, so there, it has its positive and negative points

i would like it if we didnt get a guarantee spot, maybe we'd try a little instead of sending in tripe. I'm always embarrassed by our entry. But like you said they need our money to keep it going along with the other big 5, i just wish we'd make a descent song WORTH the £150 a year i pay (okay, eurovision is only a small portion of that ;P )

anyway, cant wait to see what gems are in that show, theres always 2 or 3 songs that are awesome!!

I feel the same about Spain XD I'm not spanish, not even european but I feel a special attachment to Spain, for being the only spanish speaking country that participates so it almost feels like it was my own country and I usually think they send poor entries :/ but hey! this year was different and I really like the spanish entry, maybe one of these years the UK can send an awesome song, with possibilities to win :D

I really like Estonia's song this year (although I'm estonian, I haven't liked our entries for...years) BUT I'll have to admit that the studio version is much better than live was.
And the British singer's voice is amazing! I honestly thought that he is much much much younger.

I often get disappointed by the live versions of some songs indeed. I don't think Ott sang that bad last night though :P

I don't know how to feel about the UK this year, I do like their song but I think it lacks something... I don't know what :B

As I promised earlier I'm letting you know my favourites:
(Portugal came to the extraordinary Baku with a song like usually Portuguese participations are - very sentimental with a twist of "Fado", while the other countries are jumping and dancing, we are crying our difficult life  , so no wonder, we didn't make the final.)
I like very much Spain, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania, though I truly prefer to hear each participant sing in heir own language and not English.
Anyway I do appreciate the show visually, it's always very well organized and give us beautiful images :)

I totally saw Portugal passing to the final, it was a shame indeed :( I guess the contest is still ruled by catchy pop songs.

I hear many discussions about languages, with many valid points from "both sides", if a country should stick to their native language or not. I understand why many countries opt to sing in english, historically not many songs win if they're not in english, but I agree, I wish more countries would decide to send songs in their home languages, sometimes a particular song sounds way better in the original language rather than english. (Serbia's and Italy's are some good examples from this year)

I actually had a hard time deciding if I liked Serbia or Spain more  they're pretty much tied in first place for me.
I've liked most of the serbian entries from the last years :B Caroban was one of my favourites from last year, funny enough probably the one I like least is Molitva from 2007 :lmao: But yeah, I think Nije Ljubav Stvar is my favourite serbian entry of all time

Oh I totally forgot about 'Caroban' XD Yeah, I liked that song too but 'Cipela' and 'Ovo je balkan' was a total failure in my opinion. I don't know if you know the lyrics meaning of either of the songs but if you don't you might as well better not know them XD
'Molitva' was really catchy when it came out but then bored the hell out of me because they keep playing it EVERYWHERE in Serbia even a year after the Eurovision XD Not to mention that there's a tv commercial that has instrumental cover of it and they keep playing it even today

I still haven't heard all the songs so I don't have a top list yet but these last few days Sweden's 'Euphoria' has been kinda stuck in my head  They are going to rank high, that's for sure.
