Feature: The Legend of Korra

Featuring: The Legend of Korra

The Legend of Korra is an American animated television series that premiered on the Nickelodeon television network on April 14, 2012. The series is a sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, which aired on the same network from 2005 to 2008.

The series takes place 70 years after the original

When technology has advanced to that of around the 1920s on Earth. In it, some people have the ability known as "bending" by which they control and manipulate either water, earth, fire, or air. One bender, known as the "Avatar" and described as the "physical embodiment of the world's spirit", has the power to bend all four elements and is responsible for maintaining both the balance of nature and peace between the world's four great nations.

Korra, the protagonist of the new series, is the next incarnation of the Avatar after Aang of the original series. Creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko follow Korra as she learns the art of airbending, having mastered the other three elements, while facing an anti-bender revolution by a group known as the Equalists.

The first season of the series consisted of 12 episodes, which culminated with a 2 episodes special last saturday, June 23rd.

A second season with 14 episodes has been already announced.

I've said it before: fanart is not unfamilar to DA. Fans from all over the world devote their artistic abilities and inspiration to create amazing pieces of art to recreate their favourite characters, scenes, what was or what could have been.

Now with the season finale from last saturday, a mix of both positive and negative opinions have flooded the internet, specially on sites like tumblr and deviantArt. Through pieces of art, journals and blogs the fans have been demostrating their reaction to the end of this first season. It doesn't matter if they loved it or hated it, (because is really hard to stay on middle ground) the same passion for the show is evident in each post.

Now to commemorate the end of this first part of The Legend of Korra, this article intends to showcase some of these artworks devoted to the show. Enjoy!

Actually, the whole reason the series was rushed is because the whole plan from the beginning is to create a mini-series.

I'm no expert on this, but according to the research I've done, some of the animation is done in the US at Nickelodeon, Studio Mir in South Korea (they also worked on AtLA), and Technicolor in India (CG vehicles). I don't know much about the working conditions at Technicolor, but their website seems pretty legit (they have documents about corporate ethics, etc. and they do a lot of work for Nick, Dreamworks, etc.). Studio Mir does not seem to have sweatshop working conditions from what I've seen. Animation in South Korea is pretty serious since people go to animation college and they do a lot of animation for overseas. Maybe it'd be different if, say, it was North Korea, but otherwise, I haven't found anything that supports what your friend said.

Avatar: The Legend of Aang was the major inspiration that got me up and drawing, because I thought the style was just so amazing. I'm /so/ glad that I found it, because I can't imagine not drawing the way I do today :D The Legend of Korra, while there were some points I kinda disagreed with, I loved it. Ignoring the romance, the story was great and could have even been better had some points not been so rushed.

Oh, I wasn't trying to imply that you were blaming anyone, I'm sorry if it seemed like that. I was just letting you know there was a reasonable reason for it. Sorry again.

When I heard there was a season two, I figured that would be the exact case. Like Katara would say something like "She can still bend, but will have to learn all over again" or something XD

I wasn't saying I blamed anyone, I'm just stating my opinion on the matter. I'm happy there's more, but now it's gonna feel like an extra.

Same source, a sweatshop is a factory or workshop where workers work in often poor conditions for very low pay and very long hours. They work 60-80 hours a week for a pay of 10 dollars an hour. Which is a gross underpay for the work they're doing. The usual average for that kinda work is 30-35 dollars per hour.

Actually, if you remember, she was getting down the movements, the fluidity of airbending. It just wasn't happening yet. My theory on why it wasn't happening was because she had a gift for all of the other elements, thus relied on them the most. Airbending came to her at a time of desperation, a time where she was resolved to save Mako and couldn't rely on the other elements to save him. But that's just my theory.

I didn't like a lot of things about the finale, but on the note of Airbending, I didn't like that because it came out of nowhere. Before now, she had never had the skill and was supposedly faced with a block, but even more infuriating is that she was Airbending the exact same damn way she would've Firebent. It didn't take practice like it did for Aang; she wasn't patient like Tenzin said she HAD TO BE; she learned how to Airbend with pure rage.
AND THAT'S JUST NOT HOW IT'S SUPPOSED TO WORK.

Very nice with the features.

Personally, I loved the ending. I've had people tell me that it was a terrible and rushed ending. I though it was great because the only way she figured out she could airbend was when she wasn't relying on fire, water and earth bending to take care of everything for her. When her crutches were taken away, only then did she have the freedom of her mind and clarity to stand on her own and airbend. Although, I have to admit, I almost lost it when all the past avatars came about. It was just so awesome to see so many different faces.

from my friend who works as an animator who applied to work on legend of korra and was told they don't hire people from the US to do the animation work they out source it to South Korea.

I think it could have been handled differently, definitely! So it would have been more a part of the character development, I hope it will be better for the second season.

The love triangle in this series was unnecessary. It honestly brought absolutely nothing beneficial to the storytelling or character development. It seemed like it was just there to tease shippers and waste valuable time.

That's because to begin with only one season was asked for by Nick, but after seeing the first season they asked for another. As much as I agree with you, it's really not Bryke's fault, they thought they were going to have to tie everything up in one season. I'm sure it would have been different if they'd been given the second season before finishing all of the voice acting for book one.

It felt too much like a Disney-like happy ending, everything got resolved at the end and everybody is happy again! But anyway, let's hope season 2 will be even better.

I was really surprised at how popular the series became. I was never a fan of Avatar myself, mostly because my brother said the show was dumb and I listened to him. ^^;

I agree! It does feel like it was such a close end, for me it would have been a little more interesting if Korra wouldn't had recovered... ya know... that easily, like the second season could have been a journey to recover those, something like that. Anyway, let's see how the story continues.

The season finale was neat, but I was a tad disappointed finding out who Amon was...I just liked him as a mystery better. D:

I think the ending of the finale was a bit too much of a concrete closing of the book, compared to what it should be (a chapter break). It seemed too final to me, though it was very fitting. Unlike The Last Airbender, there was nothing to indicate a continuation (save the announcement), whereas the looming war with the fire nation was prevalent for the entirety of Aang's journey.

The Legend of Korra is great, but now it feels finished to me. Anything after this finale, it's just tacking on to the end, which I don't like one bit.

yeah ditto. Though I read a book series years ago called "The singer of all songs" and it was the same story line but people had to sing to use their element, certain elements were thought to be extinct, and there was one who could use all and bring balance! Very similar
