Features: Original Fanarts

Wed Jun 20, 2012, 11:20 AM
A collection of Original Fanart

Fan Art: "Artwork that is based on a character, costume, collage, item, or story that was created by someone other than the artist" - Wikipedia

With that definition, the term "Original Fanart" may seem contradictory. However the images featured in this article are the perfect example of artworks that are based or inspired in something already existing (thus being considered "Fanart") yet presenting the artist's original vision of said
inspiration.

Said in less fancy words: "Fanart presented in the artist original style"

We all love fanart. That's because we all are fans of at least one thing: a book, a movie, a TV show, a game, even a fellow artist, and a large etcetera.

Fanart is not a stranger to deviantART, in fact you only have to check out the front page set to popular to discover a great plethora of fan artworks being submitted everyday, made from a great variety of artists, in an equal variety of styles.

Fandom is certainly very strong among the deviantART community, that's why the most avid fans of a certain show may consider staying away from sites like dA for an specific set of time to avoid spoilers

It is obvious that not all of us are fans of the same
subjects, but that's where the immense variety of styles and fandoms
among the community comes into play.

There's simply something for everyone! You just have to dig a little and I can assure you, you'll find fan works from any fandom whichever it is.

Quite often the fans try to emulate the style of the real thing. There are some who succeed at it. There are some times when you could think the fan artwork you're seeing is in fact official art, as opposed to art made from a fan.

But there are other times when it's precisely the opposite; when the artist tries to preserve the original idea but adding their own flavour, presenting the scene or the character in their own style. This gives as a result a fan artwork which you still identify as derivated from an existing show, game, movie or book but deviating from the original presentation, thus feeling more fresh and original.

If you add the immense plethora of styles among the dA artists to the equation, you'll have as result a wide range of different interpretations of the same character or scene.

Who said Fan Art couldn't be original?

There are still a lot of stigmas against Fan Art, one of them being the belief that you're giving up your originality and creativity as artist by making fanart, a debate that will go on forever.

However I believe, as shown with these features, that you can still create Fan Art without compromising your creativeness and originality. Just like with any other subject, you are free to present the idea in your own way.

Great article. I love drawing fanarts...love to give them a cute but sexy edge ;)
What makes me laugh but irks me at the same time is when people cut a character head put it into another character/drawing body and call that a fanart :/

I draw fanart of a series when I love it very much.
I love thinking about what and how the characters would interact/and as well how the viewers would react. everyone has enough creativity to paint it in their "own colours." :woohoo:

Fanart MUST be original. If the fanartist can't use his/her originality in creating a character, then all that originality must be found in the concept. Conceptual fanart, that's what we need xD I love drawing Astro Boy fanart and this is the main rule I always try to follow.
I love this journal, very well done!!!
