Features: Original Fanarts

Wed Jun 20, 2012, 11:20 AM
A collection of Original Fanart

Fan Art: "Artwork that is based on a character, costume, collage, item, or story that was created by someone other than the artist" - Wikipedia

With that definition, the term "Original Fanart" may seem contradictory. However the images featured in this article are the perfect example of artworks that are based or inspired in something already existing (thus being considered "Fanart") yet presenting the artist's original vision of said

Said in less fancy words: "Fanart presented in the artist original style"

We all love fanart. That's because we all are fans of at least one thing: a book, a movie, a TV show, a game, even a fellow artist, and a large etcetera.

Fanart is not a stranger to deviantART, in fact you only have to check out the front page set to popular to discover a great plethora of fan artworks being submitted everyday, made from a great variety of artists, in an equal variety of styles.

Fandom is certainly very strong among the deviantART community, that's why the most avid fans of a certain show may consider staying away from sites like dA for an specific set of time to avoid spoilers

It is obvious that not all of us are fans of the same
subjects, but that's where the immense variety of styles and fandoms
among the community comes into play.

There's simply something for everyone! You just have to dig a little and I can assure you, you'll find fan works from any fandom whichever it is.

Quite often the fans try to emulate the style of the real thing. There are some who succeed at it. There are some times when you could think the fan artwork you're seeing is in fact official art, as opposed to art made from a fan.

But there are other times when it's precisely the opposite; when the artist tries to preserve the original idea but adding their own flavour, presenting the scene or the character in their own style. This gives as a result a fan artwork which you still identify as derivated from an existing show, game, movie or book but deviating from the original presentation, thus feeling more fresh and original.

If you add the immense plethora of styles among the dA artists to the equation, you'll have as result a wide range of different interpretations of the same character or scene.

Who said Fan Art couldn't be original?

There are still a lot of stigmas against Fan Art, one of them being the belief that you're giving up your originality and creativity as artist by making fanart, a debate that will go on forever.

However I believe, as shown with these features, that you can still create Fan Art without compromising your creativeness and originality. Just like with any other subject, you are free to present the idea in your own way.

Amazing article! I completely agree. I honestly don't get the logic behind the "fan art isn't real artwork" debate. So what if the character you're drawing isn't yours? It's about the concept and idea behind the artwork. People who call fan artists out for drawing the characters they love are just bitter, in my opinion.

Fan art is about as much original as any other artwork. Because fan art requires the same amount of time and effort to pull off. Art work is about originality of thought. And as long as that is present, the artwork is original. Being a fan art is not a factor in an artwork's being original.

Great article. I love drawing to give them a cute but sexy edge ;)
What makes me laugh but irks me at the same time is when people cut a character head put it into another character/drawing body and call that a fanart :/

I draw fanart of a series when I love it very much.
I love thinking about what and how the characters would interact/and as well how the viewers would react. everyone has enough creativity to paint it in their "own colours." :woohoo:

Fanart ( I believe) Ca be Just as Creative and Expressive as Any Original Work, but there is that fine white line.

If you are making a Fanart, you are showing that you enjoy a certain thing, and have invisioned it in a specific style that you wanna show other people

You DO NOT get to say that you are creative by drawing a Camera-still from the show (or whatever you're Fan-arting) believing yourself to be making fanart.

I think that FanArt requires something more, Be it depth, Emotion, Color or even medium, You are showing that you care. So much in fact that you spent YOUR TIME expanding on the ideas (and style or whatever) To SHOW SOME SORTA FEELING.

If you're making Fanart, why not give it some MEANING?

This is so true! I enjoy when people do fan-art
What I see if people putting the characters in situations they would actually be in but with their own style
Fan-Art is just another form of expressing what you love and their should be no shame in it
Thanks for the great read :D
